Louisville, Kentucky —Crescent Hill Baptist Church, a CBF and Alliance of Baptists partner congregation joins with the Washington National Cathedral and Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, a coalition of 50 denominations and faith-based organizations to observe Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath March 13-16, 2014.
“This is an appropriate time to observe such a Sabbath,” said Rev. Jason Crosby, a pastor at Crescent Hill Baptist, “We are preparing ourselves to remember Christ's crucifixion and celebrate Christ's resurrection. Those events ask us to cling to a belief that the love, peace, and nonviolent ways of Christ are stronger than violence and death.”
An ecumenical event will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, March 13 beginning with a press conference at 4 p.m. The observance will be an occasion to remember those who have lost their lives to gunfire, pray for those whose lives have been forever changed by gun violence and discuss how communities of faith can work together to promote safety. Individual congregations will observe the remembrance in worship services throughout the weekend.
As a part of the worship service at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, worshippers will be given doves made from origami paper. Crosby also said, “Many of the doves that will be distributed were crafted by refugees from Burma who recently resettled in Louisville, and are members of our church. The fact that these symbols of peace and nonviolence were assembled by the hands of many who bear the scars of violence is a testament to the power of God's transformative love and their faithfulness. There are alternatives to violence, and those who have known violence can find healing.”
“We stand for justice,” Alliance of Baptists President Carol Blythe said, “At all times the Church is called to rise in unequivocal defense of our most vulnerable neighbors. If the voice of the Church is heard right now, we can possibly make society more just, more safe and more healthy.”
